Financial Assistance

The financial investment of your undergraduate education can be considerable, and you can see updated costs and fees in the Finance tab of the Admissions website here. There are multiple sources of support available for qualifying students. Please note that some UMD scholarships, including Banneker/Key and President’s, are awarded to new students with their admissions offer, and other opportunities are restricted to current students enrolled at the university.

Below is a list of employment, loan, and scholarship resources that could alleviate the cost of your education. This is only a partial list, and we recommend starting your investigation with the University of Maryland Financial Aid Office to explore your unique options.

 Employment Opportunities

  • Current students can apply to be a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Tutor for a variety of courses across the university. These positions require strong academic performance in a specific course, an application, and selection process.  ILS has numerous TA opportunities in our own program including first-year courses HLSC100 and HLSC280, and sophomore courses HLSC322 and BSCI330H. Students are compensated with a stipend based on credit hours for the semester, ranging from $500 to $1600.

  • Current students can apply to be a Resident Assistant (RA), which is a prestigious and competitive student staff role in the residence halls.  Compensation covers your room and board, whether you are a Marylander or coming to us from out of state. Please see the RA position description here.

  • Federal work-study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate students with financial need as determined by FAFSA paperwork.

  • The University of Maryland has a list of on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities as well as within our Career Center office.  Popular campus employers for our students in the past include the Eppley Recreation Center (just steps away from LaPlata), the service desks located in residence halls, and the ILS Office Assistant position.

  • As an R1 institution, UMD also has many ongoing research studies in need of participants who are compensated for their participation.  Sites promoting these opportunities are restricted to current students and unavailable to access until you enroll.

 

Scholarships

  • To be considered for merit scholarships as an incoming student, prospective students must submit a completed undergraduate admission application by the early action deadline for the fall semester for their matriculation year. The fall semester early action deadline is November 1 for new students and is March 1 for transfer students.

  • The Banneker/Key Scholarship offers full ride or half ride scholarships based on a variety of highly competitive factors.

  • Maryland State Financial Assistance offers additional scholarship opportunities.

  • There are a variety of discipline-specific scholarships within CMNS, which you can explore with your academic advisor.
