Research in ILS

Engaging in research is a key component of the ILS program, ensuring students gain a deep appreciation for the processes behind scientific discovery. These experiences prepare students for careers as researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, biologists, and clinicians. ILS students are expected to complete a 240-hour biology-related research experience and develop scientific poster during their first two years, a requirement for earning the ILS honors citation.

Research opportunities are available at a variety of top-tier institutions, including NIH, FDA, USDA, and the Smithsonian Institution. These experiences are designed to provide meaningful exposure to biological, biomedical, and clinical research while helping students acquire transferable skills critical to their future careers.

Students are encouraged to wait until after their first year to begin research. This allows them to establish a strong academic foundation, adjust to college life, and develop the expertise needed to choose the right lab. Starting later also increases their competitiveness for research positions and helps avoid mismatched lab experiences.
